A great book on the Okinawa campaign is Tennozan. Presents both sides pretty well, and once you read it, you will laugh at modern concepts of what a tough battle really is. Couldn't put it down, and I'll never forget the story.

I lived right there thirty years later. visited many battle memorials during my time in Okinawa. almost all are built over with homes of some type. the family housing in Kadena AB was built over a buried bomb dump. and yes, sleep well, the bombs are still there. residents in Okinawa City are always finding old ordinance rising up to the top of the ground.
there is a battle monument between the runways at Kadena. it's visible but not possible to visit except during fod walks.
